I had the honour to address
you in Despatch ho 12 of the 24
of August last in reply to your
circular ho
of
the
the
29th of July
on
th
the subject of the Hongkong subsidiary
Coins in China.
Since that despatch
was written
the Chinese Goot mint has poured
mouth after mouthe
flood of token
coins into this province. These cours have
of
course spread into Hong Kong. They are already for in excess of the demand
for
for them, and the supply goer

Here, as a general rule no distinction is made between English
and Chinese
coins, but I have been told that the
:native shroffs and compradores prefer Chinese ten cent coins to English merely
because the of the former
Equal to a
are
exactly
dollar in weight, while thu
English dimes are a little over that weight.
It has been ascertained that Canton Chinese have made very
clever counterfeits
of the English len and twenty cent pieces,
And that these have been in circulation
for some time. At the request of the Hong Kong Government I have written
to the Chinese Authorities on the subject.
